Dear Parents and Families,

As you know, our students enjoy participating in various field trips throughout the year.  Several classes started our current school year visiting the agricultural booths at the Champlain Valley Fair, all K-5 classrooms have been to at least one performance at the Flynn Center this year, and our 8th grade students have enjoyed hiking and a cross-country skiing day at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe.  Mr. Evans and I have been discussing a unit he will teach later this spring that may culminate in a canoe trip along the Lamoille for his students.

This past Tuesday, our school was the field trip destination for two elementary classrooms from SATEC.  The children came to FCS to learn more about… ….you guessed it, sugaring! Our middle school students facilitated the groups of kids in stations, and I understand it was a wonderful morning for everyone involved.  We are so proud of our kids, and grateful for the organization our teachers put forth to make it happen.

Our K-5 students will be taking field trips this week to Fairfield homesteads to learn more about sugaring.  Earlier this month, the Four Winds volunteers and the Outdoor Classroom board worked together to organize this for K-5. A big thank you to Candi Branon for all of her help with this! We are so appreciative.

All of these activities support our efforts to provide a well-rounded educational experience for our students at FCS. Learning happens everywhere, and when we can branch out of the bricks and mortar we gain new perspectives about the world, each other, and ourselves.

I just returned from my own field trip to San Francisco, California, where I attended a national leadership conference.  It was a long trip for 2 days of sessions but worth the travel.  I’ll be writing more about what I learned on this blog.  It has been less of a blog and more of a letter link, but I plan to work on that soon! I left energized with new ideas and ways to think about our work with our students.  I’m grateful I had the opportunity to attend.

Happy spring! - Mrs. Wood
