Students have generally become increasingly interested in technology-related programs and higher-paying jobs. Normally, these call for higher-level classes in computer-based and digital-first courses. There is much proof to show that acquiring a college diploma evens the odds of landing better careers. Most of the time, it is completely true.
However, students are more often than not unaware that these can just as well be treated as options. Without pushback, a good number of schools have glossed over career opportunities perceived as old-fashioned or considered to be outside the social norm.
Stay ahead of the crowd
Institutions have, for the longest time possible, been solely focused on sending students to colleges and universities, so much so that young adults usually do not remember that viable careers exist outside diplomas and degrees.
That said, carpentry—also known as woodwork—is metaphorically a window into the outside world of higher education. It can help you realize your innate passions and help you look beyond attending a higher institution for the next four years or more and running into millions of student loan debt.
That is precisely why we are adding carpentry as an elective course to Fairfield Center School’s curriculum. The course will be taught by Mike Hoffman, a longtime superintendent for a local metal buildings construction company. Even if you are not particularly interested in carpentry, it can show you that there is a sea of options outside the status quo: often, obtaining a degree in a field you might not find remotely interesting.
Handwork is a forgotten trade. It is constantly being overlooked by many high schools. Nevertheless, it is as relevant today as it has ever been, and its significance extends beyond the workshop. Taking the elective can set you on the path to becoming a professional woodworker, construction specialist, builder, or joiner in the future.
Many successful carpenters started with learning woodworking in the optional high school class. Most of them discovered the career path because of the short woodshop classes they attended and were driven to find out more about the vocation.
